Donation to Dana Farber

We recently sent the following letter along with a $500 donation to Dana-Farber. Currently, Stop & Shop is matching all donations to Dana-Farber so we felt this was a great time to donate. I couldn't paste the letter here but it's pasted directly below in the comments section.

  1. To Whom It May Concern:

We are blessed to be able to donate $500 to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute on behalf of our 22 month old son, Owen Bernheim.

In January 2009, our then eight month old son was diagnosed with hydrocephalus caused by a brain tumor, which is located in his mid-thalamus. He had an emergency endoscopic third ventriculostomy at Yale-New Haven Hospital and recovered well. Due to the location of the tumor it could not be biopsied or removed.

We sought a second opinion at the Jimmy Fund, which is where we met Dr. Mark Kieran, who concurred with Yale’s initial diagnosis and recommendations. We were thoroughly impressed with Dr. Kieran’s level of expertise as well as his bedside manner. We truly appreciated the time he spent with us and how he thoroughly explained Owen’s situation. We did follow-up again with him this January. Although we are in a “wait and watch” scenario, we are pleased to know that Dr. Kieran is on the cutting-edge of researching and treating pediatric low-grade astrocytomas.

At the time when Owen was diagnosed he was enrolled at Kindercare of Wallingford, CT. The caring staff and families wanted to do something to show their support for Owen. They held two fundraisers and raised over $3000. The donations were to be used for whatever we needed to help Owen. Fortunately, we have not needed to use the funds. We hope to eventually donate all of the funds.

Over the last year, Owen’s tumor has remained stable. He’s recovered, meeting and exceeding his milestones. He’s your typical toddler – full of life and full of energy. We’re blessed that there has been no change over the past year. We trust that these funds will be used to help with the diagnosis, treatment, and research of childhood cancers. Please be sure to allocate this donation to children’s cancers, and if possible, Dr. Kieran’s research on pediatric low grade astrocytomas.

We are grateful for the work of Dr. Mark Kieran and the compassion of those at the Jimmy Fund.
